The number of people suffering from dementia in old poeple`s and
care homes continues to rise.
Relevant knowledge regarding the support and care of people with
dementia is essential to give the nursing staff „tools“ to
make their own working day easier and to ensure the highest possible
quality of life.It is important to recognise the emotional needs
of people in all the different stages of dementia as only then appropriate
methods can be applied and support can be offered. The cognitive
deficits should be discovered as soon as possible. This way,
the person with dementia and the persons around her can adapt appropriatly
to the evident changes avoiding emotional trauma.
The focus of the course is not only to teach participants specifically
about dementia but above all to teach them how to deal with the
difficult behaviour of people with dementia and how to interact
with residents with cognitive deficits.
An open – learning atmosphere encourages self – cofidence
and personal responsibility which increases the competence of the
nursing staff.
Our experience has shown that the possibility of supervising a
specific problem situation and to review problems occuring
on a day-to-day basis ( in agreement with the relevant requirements
of the home ) is very helpful and has additionally led to a consolidation
of previously acquired knowledge.
Ideally all the members of the staff in a home ( including
cleaning staff,
kitchen staff etc.) should have the opportunity to attend the
courses. This way an inprovement in communication
within the team as a whole can be achieved
- to provide relief for nursing staff
- to ensure fewer changes in staff and less sickness leave
- to improve the quality of life for residents
All participants receive a confirmation of attendance at the end
of the course.
